Bolivia and Peru
Bolivia was
every bit as exciting as we remembered it to be. With desert,
jungle, high plateau, huge mountains and everything in between
Bolivia is an adventurers paradise. Entering at the far south
western corner of this landlocked country we passed through
incredible landscapes; red lakes, white lakes, green lakes,
rainbow coloured mountain tops and vast salars. Tsouthern part of
the country was fabulous - wild and remote.
Often by
accident, we found some of our most challenging driving so
far. The roads in Bolivia are brutal, very rarely tarmac
(on our routes at least) and usually washboarded. The high
mountain ledges that pass as roads here tested our nerves (and Bee's
grip) and the many many river crossings tested her underwater
driving abilities. Despite the hammering, Bee did us proud
and, although we did have to reach for the shovels quite a few
times, we survived to tell the tale.
We
got caught up in a dispute between the government and the coca
farmers in Corroico and end up blockaded for a week and, whilst we
were stuck in a nice place, we also ended up driving a road with the
unenviable title of: 'World's most dangerous Road' not just
once but three times. Eventually we broke free and headed
north to Peru and after a few days in the beautiful city of Cusco we
embarked on the 4 day Salkantay Trail to the ruined Inca
city of Machu Picchu.
Returning to
Bolivia (with a bit of creative border crossing) we had
another attempt at sumitting Huayna Potosi, a 20,000ft peak that has
beaten us several times before in previous years. Oh and we
notched up another mountain biking epic too ! |
