Belize

We truly fell on our feet when we entered Belize. After three weeks in the Spanish speaking world it felt like a holiday and turned out to be a real treat. One of our first stops was at the Land Rover garage run by British expats. Graham and Joyce looked after us big time and their connections and introductions enabled us to meet lots of interesting people, make more new friends and get a much deeper insight into their adopted country than we ever could have hoped for in such a short time. They even made it possible for us to take part in one of our craziest adventures to date - La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge; a 170 one hundred and seventy mile canoe race from the jungle highlands on the border with Guatemala to Belize city. This was a gruelling four day test of endurance and stamina; circling crocodiles below and vultures ever present above doing their bit to remove the urge for us to bail out.

Once the race was over the adventures didn’t end there. Our new friends Alan and Dolly whisked us up into the social whorl of expat Belize and one of our fellow canoe teams invited us over to the Caribbean Islands just off the coast. With Belize’s barrier reef, its most famous feature just five minutes away how could we refuse such an invitation? Much sun, sea and BBQ later we were fully recovered from our exertions on the river, but sad to say goodbye to the little country that had treated us so well.
